Sustaining the life of a historic structure: Remediation of the NV Energy Elko, Nevada Powerhouse using oxidation

To prepare a historically-significant former diesel powerhouse building in Elko, NV for eventual re-use, Pacific Ozone partnered with JBR in an effort to quantify and remediate soil and groundwater contamination resulting from historical operations at the former powerhouse. After defining extent of contamination using Geoprobe® sampling, a cleanup remedy for the site was selected, consisting of in-situ chemical oxidation, utilizing ozone injection into the soil and groundwater beneath the site. Using contaminant mass estimates from the contamination survey, a remedial system was designed, installed and started up using Pacific Ozoneís ozone generator, oxygen concentrators, air compressors and ozone instruments, and is now continuously injecting up to 100 lbs/day of ozone into the contaminated areas, oxidizing the petroleum contamination to carbon dioxide and water vapor.ÝThe system utilizes a complex sequence of alternating injection and vacuum extraction cycles to ensure mixing in the subsurface.
